As part of Riot’s plan to expand their games roster beyond League of Legends, Players were prompted in the client as well as per email to ‘update’ their league of legends accounts to Riot accounts, one login and password for all Riot future games.
Issues rose when people went through the process to suddenly discover their usernames already taken and they had to change it going forward.
They took the summoner name MonteCristo that I have had for 10 years since beta.— MonteCristo (@MonteCristo) November 27, 2019
Even Popular League personalities complained on twitter as they had their login information taken out and had to change the username to something else.
Why were most login names taken ?
Turns out, Riot allowed people in the past to create the same username for diffrent regions including PBE, so if you had an account on EUW called ‘therift’, you could still open another account called ‘therift’ on NA or PBE and still get in and play.
When Froskurinn, MonteCristo and many more tried to update their lol accounts to Riot accounts with the same username, they were faced with the message “This username already exists”
How can I keep my old username ?
Someone reached out to Riot support team asking for an explanation and a way to keep his old username after he had it for more than 5years and he was forced to change it because it interfered with his PBE account, Riot responded explaining the issue in this email.
Now, with the implementation of Riot Accounts, you can only have one username for all Riot properties, including all league of legends regions and other future games.
Let’s say you play on NA, but you created accounts on EUW, LAN and PBE using the same login username (not summoner name/in-game name).
Since now Riot doesn’t allow duplicate “login usernames”, you won’t be able to use any of those accounts until there are no duplicates.
Therefore, if you want to keep that username on NA, you need to reach https://update-account.riotgames.com/ then sign in with your EUW, LAN and PBE accounts and change their usernames:
- NA: Username
- EUW: UsernameEUW
- LAN: El_Username
- PBE: UsernameonPBE
If those four accounts of yours were the only ones across all regions sharing your username, you’ll be able to login on NA without changing it.
However, if someone in OCE (for example) has the same username too, you’ll be stuck on the same situation until A: OCE user picks a different username, or B: you give up and pick one yourself.
